Mythology and Scripture are not literal history and aren’t meant to be read literally. They’re symbolic/allegorical works, filled with a culture’s version of the Wisdom Teaching about how to raise one’s inner level of Being from the material level to a divine level.
God is the highest level of creation, but that doesn’t mean “some guy up in a cloud” – “highest” is a condition, not a location.
When Ramakrishna, or Meister Eckart, or Buddha, communed with the divine, they weren’t “talking to some invisible guy in the sky”. They had achieved something internally. Now I am well aware that many fundamentalist/literal ‘believers’ think God is their friend in the sky – I call this “confusing God with Santa Claus” – but that’s not all religion is about: in fact, I don’t think it’s really about such silliness at all.
When the Old Testament talks about a journey from Egypt back to the Promised Land, it is a symbolic teaching about the soul’s Inner journey from material experience (called “Egypt” in the stories) to spiritual enlightenment (called “the Promised Land”). This is the same meaning behind such tales as “The Search for the Holy Grail”, “Persephone’s Return to Olympus”. “Muhammad’s Journey to the Seven Heavens”, and so forth.
If these stories were just meant to be read literally, I’d have to be an atheist!
